Hello,
It’s been just over a week since I quietly released my new online studio workshop, Scratching the Surface, and I finally had a moment to sit down and write about it here.
This project has been living in my studio (and inside my head!) for months — all the carving, scratching, painting, and experimenting layered into one long stretch of play. I’m so happy it’s now out in the world… and even happier to hear your early responses. A few of you have already written to say how much you’re enjoying the techniques so far, which honestly means the world to me.
Scratching the Surface isn’t a step-by-step project or a copy-this-exact-thing kind of class.
It’s a studio-style workshop, filmed as if you were sitting at my work table with me — exploring colour, mark-making, texture, and those satisfying little painterly surprises that happen when you loosen up and play.
Inside the workshop, I walk you through:
Carved & scratched lines on baked clay
Painterly scribble textures using masking and soft tools
Painted clay elements created on unbaked clay (your companion pieces)
And finally, bringing it all together with ideas for jewelry or tiny artworks.
It’s a 90-minute, self-paced video, and you can pause, rewind, or revisit sections whenever you want.
If you’d like a closer look, here’s the full workshop page with all the details:
Scratching the Surface — Studio Workshop
I really loved making this workshop. It blends everything I’m drawn to in my own jewelry practice — colour, movement, texture and the joy of not knowing exactly where a piece is headed until it reveals itself.
Thank you for being here, for reading, and for supporting my work in all the quiet, meaningful ways.
Wendy
